Faro Mine Remediation
May 1, 2024British Columbia
In early 2020, Source Environmental Associates (Source) was retained by Nadleh Whut’en First Nation (Nadleh) and Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (Canada) to complete Phase I, II, and III Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) at Seaspunkut Indian Reserve (IR) #4, land owned by Nadleh. The reserve, known by Nadleh as Tse Yaz Bunk’ut, is located along the shore of Fraser Lake and encompasses 523 acres.
The project focused on understanding and remediating the site of the former Lejac Residential School, which operated on these lands from 1922 to 1976. Source assessed residual contamination from past remediation efforts and supported actions to restore the land for future community use.
Through community engagement meetings, interviews, and field investigations, Source identified and delineated the key areas of contamination. A detailed remediation plan was then developed to address these areas, designed to support Nadleh’s intended future uses for the Site while meeting regulatory requirements and aligning with the Yinka Dene Uza’hne Water Law (YDWL). As of December 2024, Source successfully completed remediation of the two contamination sources that posed the greatest risk to the Site.
Source’s remediation work was covered in the Prince George Citizen here.
